Your Complete Guide to Newborn Photography in Westchester, NY

Hi, I’m Staci Brennan, a newborn and family photographer serving Westchester, NY, and Northern New Jersey. If you’re expecting a baby or recently welcomed one, you might be wondering when to schedule a newborn session, what it involves, or how to get the most out of it.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know so you feel informed, confident, and excited about preserving these early days.

Why Newborn Photography Is So Meaningful

As an experienced baby photographer, I know how quickly those first few weeks go by. The sleepy stretches, the curled-up poses, the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms—it all changes so fast.

Photographing newborns isn’t just about cute pictures. It’s about capturing connection, emotion, and your family’s story as it begins. I’ve been photographing newborns for over 15 years and take a gentle, baby-led approach that keeps things natural and comfortable.

When to Book Your Family Newborn Session

I recommend booking your session 3 to 4 weeks before your due date. This gives us time to plan and guarantees a spot on my calendar.

Most sessions happen when the baby is between 6 and 14 days old. At this stage, babies are usually sleepier and more flexible, which helps with posing. But don’t worry—if your baby is a bit older, I can still create beautiful images up to around 4 weeks of age.

What to Expect During Your Session

All of my newborn sessions take place in your home using natural light. This creates a calm, relaxed environment and results in authentic, timeless photos.

Each session lasts about 2 to 3 hours. I bring everything we need: wraps, soft textures, minimal props, and a few classic pieces. I’ll guide you through gentle poses and candid moments. We’ll take breaks for feeding, soothing, or anything your baby needs.

Parents, siblings, and even pets are welcome to join in. Some of my favorite images come from these quiet family moments.

What to Wear and How to Prepare

I always recommend soft, neutral colors—cream, beige, gray, white—because they keep the focus on your baby and work well in any setting.

Moms often choose a simple, flowy dress. Dads can wear a light, solid-colored shirt. For siblings, I suggest coordinated tones without busy prints or logos. Comfort is key.

To prepare, try feeding your baby right before I arrive and keeping the room warm. Have a pacifier handy if you use one. That’s really all you need—I’ll handle the rest.

A Peek Into a Real Session

Sessions typically start in the morning, after the baby has eaten. We use the soft light from your windows and let the session flow naturally. I capture all the quiet, in-between moments—the way you hold your baby, the little yawns, the way siblings peek in to say hello.

One recent client told me:

“You made the whole experience so easy. The images brought me to tears.”
